Somerfield and its suitor, the Co-op, are still in discussions over a potential takeover, despite disagreements over the price. A deal could be struck within weeks. The Co-op was the only prospective buyer to submit a proposal for the British supermarket chain.

A group of Deeside College students and staff recently packed bags for Christmas shoppers at the Somerfield store in Buckley in aid of the college’s chosen charity the NSPCC. The group gave up their own time and raised over £600 for the children’s charity.

The Co-operative's takeover of Somerfield has been given the go-ahead by the Office of Fair Trading, on the condition that they sell off 126 local stores. The OFT are concerned that the deal would have a negative effect on local business. The two retailers are to seek out suitable buyers for the local stores for the OFT's approval.
